Changing your currency for local currency is one the biggest areas of complaint for backpackers who always seem to get ripped off. The reality is all foreign exchange brokers are businesses and must make a profit to exist so you will always get less than you expected when changing currency.
There are a few rules and things you can do that will save you loads of money:-
- Use a credit card. Credit cards a both convenient and safe and all major cards such as Master, Visa and American Express are accepted worldwide. There are a few banners at the bottom of this screen linking to sites where you can apply for a credit card online.
- If you need cash exchange as little as possible. If you have foreign money left at the end of your backpacking adventure you will be charged a second service fee when changing it back to you home currency.
- Try not to use banks and travel agents to exchange currency. You will find small independent brokers give you a better rate and many do not charge a service fee. Most post offices also offer to exchange currency commission free.
- Always take a pocket calculator with you. Thousands of backpackers have been cheated by exchange dealers who use different rates to those they advertise. Doing your own calculation in front of them will prevent this from happening.
Backpackers Tip: Do not be afraid to apply for a credit card. Even if you are given a very low credit limit you may use the card account much the same as a savings account by depositing funds into it thereby increasing the amount you have to spend. If you do need to use the credit facility always pay back the full amount owing on due date to avoid paying hefty interest. You should also apply for more than one card in the event one application is declined.
Most credit card issues require that you already have a bank account. U.K. residents may click here to open an instant bank account online if one is needed.
